Questions to Ask a Reference

It’s common advice when searching for a design/build team to ask for references.  This is good advice, but one may wonder, “what questions should I ask?”  Here’s a quick list of ideas to help as you prepare to make that call.

  • Why did you choose this company?
  • Did they handle problems with character and integrity?
  • How well were change orders communicated to you?
  • Were you, your family and your home treated with respect?
  • Was there regular communication or problems with communication?
  • What was the worst thing that happened during the process?
  • Did you finalize all selections before beginning construction?
  • Was your project completed on time?
  • Did you make any changes?
  • Was your project completed on budget?
  • Did you find this company to operate with integrity?
  • Did this design/build team meet and exceed your expectations?
  • What were some of their best qualities?
  • What were some of their limitations or weaknesses?
  • And most importantly – would you use them again?
